Signs of Cockroach Infestation
Cockroaches have been around for more than 100 million years, long before people arrived on Earth. Today, roaches seek food, water, and shelter in our yards and homes.
If you have a roach infestation, you’ll likely see these shy insects in dark corners, near food crumbs and spills, in wet and humid locations, and under clutter.
Cockroaches move quickly and can squeeze into very small places, disappearing from sight in seconds.
Watch for these signs:
- A single cockroach, which often means more are in the shadows
- Roach droppings that look like pepper flakes or black rice, up to one eighth inches long
- Egg cases known as oothecae, reddish-brown, about a third of an inch long, holding 10 to 20 eggs
- Unusual musty or oily odor that cockroaches emit to attract other roaches

Types of Local Cockroaches
Here in our local area, we see two main types of cockroaches in homes and businesses: German roaches and American roaches. Both types of roaches multiply fast, live quite long (years!), and are skilled at squeezing into small, dark spaces. We also see the occasional oriental cockroach.
- Adult German roaches are about half and inch long, with brown bodies and wings (although they don’t fly), six pronounced legs, as well as two antennae almost as long as their bodies. You’ll most often see them in kitchens, seeking food and water. They tend to hide in cracks and crevices and under appliances, even in garbage disposals or recycling bins.
- The American cockroach is longer, often 1.5” to 2”, with a reddish or yellowish body. The body has a more oval shape and the wings are functional. These large cockroaches can fly or run very fast. They’re often outside around drain pipes and under wet leaves, but American cockroaches can also invade your home interior, especially when outside temperatures are cold.
- The oriental cockroach, also sometimes called a waterbug or black cockroach, is about an inch long. These cockroaches live in areas of the home that are dark and damp. Oriental cockroaches often travel through sewers and may come in your home through pipes and drains.
Any type of roach is a problem, as a cockroach infestation in your home or business is often seen as a sign of imperfect sanitation. Get rid of roaches fast before friends visit your home or customers visit your business and are not happy to see the signs of an infestation.
